Important Information on Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA)

Stimulus checks

We have been receiving numerous questions relating to the recent government stimulus checks paid to each individual in the US as determined by their most recent tax returns filed. Without going into further details here, if you included your bank information in prior tax filings, you should have received a payment into that account by now. If you did not include bank information when you filed your taxes, you should receive a paper check, although they are still being processed. If you have not received this payment please use the following link to check on your status.

Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA)

For those folks who normally receive a regular paycheck but are no longer receiving pay, you should be filing for unemployment with your state agency. For regular situations like this the states have been very responsive and when including the federal augmentation amount the benefits are very helpful.

Where the states have not been so effective relates to the new extended rules for sole practitioners and gig economy workers. Under the CARES Act, benefits now include these types of workers for the first time. Unfortunately none of the states were ready for this and are struggling to catch up. Again, you should contact your state unemployment website to file for the benefits and keep on checking to see if their programs are up and running.

We caution you to make sure that you have the necessary documentation to support your claim. Generally this means evidence of the how you get your income (good examples are filed tax returns, 1099’s, invoices). Apparently unemployment offices will accept good faith attestations about a person’s wages but documents are preferred.  Please contact us with any questions.

We wish you health. More to follow.
